Abortion Pills: What You Should Know
The most effective abortion pill method approved by the FDA uses two medicines: mifepristone and misoprostol.
Right now, because of legal limits on mifepristone, Cambridge Reproductive Health Consultants cannot mail mifepristone. We are mailing misoprostol-only. If you want both medicines, you can still get them by visiting an abortion clinic.
What’s the difference between the two Options?
Option 1: Mifepristone + Misoprostol
This is the most effective option.
-
Works for 95 to 98 out of 100 people
-
Usually works faster
-
Has fewer side effects
How it works:
-
Mifepristone stops the pregnancy from growing by blocking a hormone called progesterone. Most people do not feel much after taking mifepristone.
-
Misoprostol causes the uterus to cramp and empty, which ends the pregnancy.
Option 2: Misoprostol Only
This is also a safe option, but it is slightly less effective.
-
Works for about 90 to 95 out of 100 people
-
Takes more medicine
-
May cause more side effects
-
Can take longer to work
Possible side effects include:
-
Diarrhea
-
Chills
-
Fever
-
Cramping and bleeding
These side effects can happen with both options, but they are often stronger when using misoprostol alone because a larger amount of misoprostol is needed.
Is Misoprostol-Only Safe? Does It Work?
Yes. Misoprostol-only is a safe and well-studied way to have an abortion. It is used by people around the world.
While it may cause more side effects and is slightly less effective than using both medicines together, it is still a recommended option when mifepristone is not available.
