What is The Massachusetts Medication Abortion Access Project (The MAP)?

We are a non-profit, asynchronous telemedicine Shield Law practice in Massachusetts that provides medication abortion care to patients from all 50 states and US territories and those with military and state department addresses. Our licensed physicians have years of experience in providing abortion care and prescribe FDA approved medications. We offer abortion pills for immediate use, future use, and as period pills. We are members of The National Abortion Federation and The Abortion Care Network.

How does The MAP work for patients?

The patient fills out a brief online medical questionnaire and signs consent forms for our telemedicine abortion service. One of our doctors reviews the forms, asks clarifying questions, contacts the patient if needed for more information, and prescribes FDA-approved medication abortion pills if the patient is eligible. We ship the medications via the US postal service from our office in Massachusetts. Most patients have the medications in their hands within 5 days of contacting our service.

We follow up with our patients after two weeks and six weeks to be sure that the medications worked. When needed we work closely with patients to obtain local in-person care through a trusted provider.

We have a secure messaging system that allows patients to talk to one of our doctors when they need assistance or support any time during the abortion process. We also provide all patients with detailed instructions with what to expect, how to contact us, and when to seek in-person follow-up care. The package we send also includes additional resources and contact information for trusted partners.

How much does it cost?

We use a pay-what-you-can-afford-to-pay model and offer medication abortion pills for immediate use $75 or less. For patients who want express shipping we charge $150. We ask patients to make a minimum payment of $5. However, we will waive the minimum fee on request if $5 poses a hardship. No matter what patients pay, they receive the same medications, resources, and the support from our care team.

We are able to provide highly subsidized care due to our wonderful partnerships with local and national abortion funds and the generous support of individual donors, volunteers, and foundations. About one third of our patients pay $25 or less.

For patients who would like abortion pills for use in the future, our service costs $150. For patients who are seeking period pills, our service costs $75.

How many patients have you served?

Since launching on September 28, 2023, we have cared for more than 65,000 patients in all 50 states. We now care for 6,000-6,500 patients per month.

How are you able to provide abortion care to patients in states with near total abortion bans?

We practice under the Massachusetts Shield Law that was passed after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Services decision. The Shield Law protects our practice, providers, patients, supporters, and funders and ensures that abortion care remains accessible through telemedicine practices like ours. The Shield Law does not make up for the lack of abortion available in patients’ own communities. Abortion bans are a human rights violation, a social injustice, and a public health catastrophe.

What do your patients say about the practice?

"I am very grateful for the work that y'all do and for your team. It's a relief and gives peace of mind knowing that there are people and medical professionals out there that care about women's health and allowing women to make whatever decisions they need to for their bodies or for their family's sake! Thank your team for everything you do for women and all your dedicated hard work!"

- Abortion patient from a state with a near total abortion ban

"I just want to thank your team again for saving my life…You could not have made the process any more simple and compassionate. The handwritten card is still taped inside my notebook because it gives me a lot of courage knowing someone out there took the time while packaging my shipment. Truly, thank you so much for supporting women’s reproductive rights and freedoms…Thank you."
